Banner

RESULTS: Hello folks, again. I realised I was just being a tad hard on Luke since he's guessed the correct answer. Each of the seven characters above was involved in a tragic love affair. Six of them were involved in a love affair where one of the parties died, and five of them died themselves. So, it's all together a rather bleak banner - but I love it nonetheless. The clue was that I said look at the characters (not the actors) but I still applaud Ryan's thinking...
...so Luke wins the guest post. Shoot me an email whenever you're ready, and thanks to all for guessing.

Hello folks, as you can see the banner has been changed. As usual I'll let you take a guess, but it will be more diffiuclt than choosing which movie the actors are from (which is quite easy, no?). The seven characters above have something in common, tell me what it is. To narrow it down, another five of the seven have something else in common. Answer one, or both and you'll get bragging rights...and a guest post if you're desirous.

HINT: You could probably say that most of the seven took my tagline advice...So many of those characters cast off common sense...they did a lot of feeling and little thinking. Viola is moved by Will's poetry, Madame de Tourvel casts off her religion for her seducer, Cecilia petulantly (but courageously) casts off her family in the face of wisdom, Keats was the ultimate sympathetic artist, and Tony didn't think enough about the ramifications of his romance with Maria. I can't say if Katherine and Frank were thinkers or feelers though...

PS. The quote is from Sondheim's Sunday in the Park with George - my favourite musical.

Banner

It's a new month, and with a new month comes a new banner. The last banner discussion had some of you foiled even though you eventually realised it was Howards End. This one is simpler - if you've seen the film, at least.  Here's the image without the words. Do you recognise the film?

It's wicked simple.

You know that I’m fond of these vague guessing games, so I’ve got another one for you. As you can tell from the name, it’s quote related. I think it’s difficult, but this quote has always stuck with me.

So I’m giving you four clues:
1) The film won a number of Oscars (but not for writing)
2) It was said by the lead actress of the film, an Oscar winner, but not for this film (though she was nominated
3) The first shot of the film is in black and white…but the rest is not
4) In the quote, the speaker is referring to a work of art

I think I’ve given you quite much. Here’s the quote.

“[It’s like being]... in a dream; there’s truth but no logic.”

Have fun. It's really easy if you saw the movie recently...

Wednesday, 24 March 2010

When I posted that new banner for my site I just happened to solicit your guesses for the origin of the picture. Little did I know that you all would be totally clueless to the film. I'm actually smirking, because nothing pleases me more than keeping secrets (but not for long).

So,because I'm me and I like to lead you on sound off below in the comments. The winner will get bragging rights (that's really all I can give you).

The argument began here, so just for some hints. It is NOT Mrs. Brown, Bright Star, The Assassination of Jesse James By the Coward Robert Ford...and it's a film from the 90s. And because I'm not completely unfeeling the film begins with all green. That's a really big hint, so happy guessing.

This is actually a repost from ages ago when only few were reading, but it's an interesting thought and I do like when bloggers participate in these meme like posts. I'm not ordering you, just gently cajoling. It's one of those weird "games" I thought of one day to pass the time...play along. The rules are simple, your answer must be a film - that's it. Be inventive, and you can give me the links to your prospective posts in the comments...I'll link them...

Gender: Iron Man
Describe Yourself: Dangerous Liaisons
How Do You Feel Right Now: One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest
Where Do You Live: Mean Streets
What's the Weather Like There: Purple Rain
Where Would You Like To Go Right Now: New York/New York
What's Your Biggest Fear: Atonement
Your Life Is A Film, Give It A Name: Defiance
What Will You Be Doing Today: Singin' In the Rain
Give Us A Piece of Advice: Wait Until Dark

So go ahead, and do the deed. Be inventive!

Jude fills out the survey...
Simon does the same...
Luke goes classic on my, sort of
Mike's choices actually make sense
Robert fills it out, I won't like to be living where he chose though
Peter Chan probably gives the best advice
Anna continues the trend with some inspired choices.

I threw out an invitation for you readers to participate in a game a few days ago. It was Oscar related, slightly. You had to find the similarities betweent eight women: Ginger Rogers, Ingird Bergman, Bette Davis, Greer Garson, Vivien Leigh, Anna Magnani, Ginger Rogers, Simone Signoret. I was looking for three things, and as I expected all four of you (what about the rest of you?) got the first two, they won Best Actress Oscars. What none of you got was that they all won their Oscar over one woman in particular - Katharine Hepburn. Those eight are the eight who have foiled Kate's chances. I guess it was a tough one, but you know how my mind flits about. So that's that. Still, I do want to give out this guest post but I want to make you work for it because I'm a sadist or what not. Still, thanks to Alex, Heather, Tom, and Luke...if no one gets the other two questions one of you will get the chance, but I'm giving out two more questions. Try one or two, maybe you'll get lucky. And by the way: they're each Oscar related.

First: What do these three gents have in common?
Don Cheadle, James Stewart, Marlon Brando.  It's difficult, but it could be easy too. (focus on Oscar)

Second: What do these women have in common?
Marie Dressler, Helen Hayes, Ginger Rogers,Greer Garson,Jane Wyman,Ingrid Bergman,Julie Andrews, Maggie Smith, Ellen Burstyn,Diane Keaton, Sally Field, Meryl Streep, Jessica Tandy, Julia Roberts (once again, focus on Oscar)

Happy guessing!

The Game

I’m throwing out a game of sorts for all you readers to participate in. I’m that playful (or so I say) but I like games. I was thinking what would be an appropriate prize. Posting prices are exorbitant (and I don’t have anything worthy to give) – but I decided on a prize (which is more of a task). Whoever wins will have the (dubious) honour of writing the first guest post on Encore’s World of Film & TV. No rules on the guest post – just something cinematic or television inspired. So here’s the task. The eight women below have something in common: three things actually, so it can be surmised in one sentence. So guess what is, and whoever’s closest to the answer (and guesses first) wins. Since sending emails can be a bitch, just comment below (so for the next few days all comments will be moderated). You have until Wednesday. Good luck.

Anne Bancroft
Ingrid Bergman
Bette Davis
Greer Garson
Viven Leigh
Anna Magnani
Ginger Rogers
Simone Signoret

It’s freakishly simple while being infuriatingly difficult…so ummm, good luck.

...that I've got that LAMB Casting feature over at the other blog. I'm encouraging you all to participate.

The Mad Hatter just recently posted his podcast. During the enjoyable 40 minutes he spoke about five of his favourite cinematography in films. It's an interesting thought, I often think of cinematography as the most important technical element of  a film - yes, more than editing. If it's not well shot, sorry, I don't like it as much. You're probably thinking, style over substance. Perhaps. But if I were to look at my top 20 films or so: the majority have enviable cinematography. So, it got me thinking what films have my favourite cinematography. It's a tough job, and one I can't do in a day. But below are shots from ten films. They're not my absolute favourite shot films; but they're some of them. Each of these have been shot that they all look so picturesque. I'd like to live in any of them.

I decided not to list the names, why don't you guess? Some are simple, some are tough. Give it a go.

Sound off below on which you recognise. Let's see who gets the most. And why don't you tell me which is your favourite, perhaps I'll expound on it in a later post.

DO THIS NOW!!!!! I saw this over at Lolita's and I'm continuing...It's actually Amanda's...

1. What's your all time favourite Clark Gable film?
Although I'm not a big Gable fan it's easily It Happened One Night. Funny, classic, and though it's not as perfect as I'd like to think, it's still pretty damn good.

2. Do you like Joan Crawford as a comedienne or drama queen?
I'm not really a fan of hers. She's all right, I guess I prefer her in drama cause Mildred Pierce keeps coming to mind.

3. In your opinion, should Ginger Rogers have made more musicals post-Fred Astaire?
No, the dramatic roles post Astaire were growth for her...even though I was no fan of Kitty Foyle. It's good she avoided being typecasted.

4. I promise not to cause you bodily (or any other serious) harm if you don't agree with me on this one. So please be honest: do you like Elizabeth Taylor? Hm?
Yes. Here's the proof. She's not always great, but she has a certain presence that stars today don't seem to.

5. Who is your favorite offscreen Hollywood couple?
This is tough. So I'll give you two Annette Bening and Warren Beatty for those alive. Two of my favourite stars and although the marriage and those kids have made Annette disappear I like when I see them out together. Kate and Spence for the departed...though they weren't married. And though it didn't last I liked Vivienne and Laurence together.

6. How about onscreen Hollywood couple?
Not sure I understand...feeling slow...but This is not definitive...but right now I'm thinking Ralph Fiennes and Kristin Scott Thomas in The English Patient. Just sizzling chemistry. I cry every time I see this scene [I  feel like such a girl]. It's a spoiler. Classically though Cary and Kate in anything...except Sylvia Scarlett.

7. Favorite Jean Arthur movie?
Mr. Smith Goes to Washington. But was that her movie?

8. What was the first Gregory Peck movie you saw?
It was probably Roman Holiday...but I was way young and didn't really look at it, it was just on. So the first real movie of his I saw was To Kill A Mockingbird.

9. What film made you fall in love with Alfred Hitchcock? (And for those of you that say, "I don't like Hitchcock" -- what is wrong with you?!)
Well I don't love Hitchcock. I'm sorry. But the closest I came to loving him was with Rebecca. A treasure for years to come.

10. What is your favorite book-to-movie adaption?
God...that's hard. I'll give you three. Atonement, The English Patient and Howards End...but none of those are classics...so The Philadelphia Story. Different from the play but still perfect in every way.

11. Do you prefer Shirley Temple as a little girl or as a teenager?
As a child. I feel like a paedophile.

12. Favorite character actor?
No idea. Thelma Ritter...?

13. Favorite Barbara Stanwyck role?
Sorry Wrong Number. Yeah she's old for the role...but your point?

14. Who is your favorite of Cary Grant's leading ladies?
Katharine Hepburn today, tomorrow and yesterday.

15. Bette Davis or Joan Crawford?
Can I say neither? No...well obviously Bette. Bette I don't care for her, Joan Crawford's personality annoys me.

16. What actors and/or actresses do you think are underrated?
Russ Tamblyn is severely underrated. I always feel bad that no one knows him...and while we're on West Side Story. I really think Richard Beymer had potential. I thought he was the best male in the movie...but his career never really took off.

17. What actors and/or actresses do you think are overrated?
I think I'd say Bette. I like her...but I really don't think that she's all that. I'd say Meryl Streep...because I rarely feel she's being honest...but I'd be stoned to death and she's not a classic actress. Oh wait, I just said it...

18. Do you watch movies made pre-1980 exclusively, or do you spice up your viewing-fare with newer films?
I watch anything...that doesn't look like crap.

19. Is there an actor/actress who you have seen in a film and immediately loved? If so, who?
Katharine H. Obviously. I saw The Philadelphia Story and that was it. There was no looking back.

20. Gene Kelly or Fred Astaire?
Astaire. I cannot forgive Kelly for the atrocity that was An American In Paris.

21. Favorite Ginger Rogers drama?
Stage Door...but for all the wrong reasons.

22. If you wrote a screenplay, who would be in your dream cast and what roles would they play? (Mixing actors and actresses from different generations is allowed: any person from any point in their career.)
God this is hard. I'm putting zero thought into this right now so ummm here goes. Joe Wright directs it or Cukor. British Period piece starring Kristin Scott Thomas, Keira Knightley, Joaquin Pheonix [or Olivier from Wuthering Heights period], Olivia DeHavilland from her Gone With the Wind Period or Juliette Binoche.

KST is Keira's mom. It's 1920s England...after WWI, she's a self centred actress, Pheonix plays the son of one of her former lovers who comes back to reveal some secret of hers [don't ask me what]. He falls in love with Keira, while being seduced by Kristin. Olivia/Juliette plays her best friend, wise cracking but a little dumb. It ends with a death? Okay...just off the top of my head.

23. Favorite actress?
Okay, seriously? Have you not read through this post...lol. It's Kate.

25. Favorite actor?

26. And now, the last question. What is your favorite movie from each of these genres:
This is so pre-empting my top 100...but here goes
Drama: The Lion in Winter
Romance: The English Patient
Musical: Cabaret
Comedy: The Philadelphia Story
Western: Tough...don't like them...at the moment The Assassination of Jesse James
Hitchcock: Rebecca

Damn that was HARD. I'd tell you all to do it...but I don't know how many of you are classic films buffs. Do it if you can and post  a comment over at Amanda's lovely site...and Alex if you're reading you have to do it...if you want to...

In two weeks the curtains will come down on The Katharine Hepburn Awards. It’s the first time that I’ve dedicated a complete award ceremony to one star. And Kate deserves it because she’s the biggest star of them all. In celebration of the Ceremony I’m opening to the floor to your opinions on any of Kate’s performance. They can be on any films [including the five performances she’s up for]. It can be positive or even [gasp] negative; it can be a dissection or a tirade. It is all up to you. Seeing that I want this to be diverse as possible and cover as many persons as possible – but I won’t restrict you. Email me at dangerous.liaison231@yahoo.com and tell me your choice [or comment below] If you don’t have a blog you can send me your article and I will post it here. The day of the event – 3rd October.

While we’re on the subject of Awards for Stars I might start another one of these sometime in mid November for another star. I’m not sure if it will be an actor though, whoever it is I know I will be rusty since there are few other than Hepburn whose filmography I have almost exhausted. I’m toying with these choices – Nicole Kidman, Martin Scorsese, Woody Allen, Judi Dench...but other than possibly Scorsese I’m not going crazy over any of them. What do you think? Do any of these float your boats? Any ideas yourself?

Monday, 14 September 2009

Voting has closed on the choosing the nominations for the Katharine Hepburn Awards and now it is time to choose the winners. The nominees are not what I expected...but oh well, you have to know. I'll be doing some profiles on each category over the next two weeks. Voting closes on September 28th.

I suppose Alex was right when he called this the weakest category. However four of the five are Oscar nominees...so it's not that bad.

As much as I like admire Anthony Hopkins I don't think he was my favourite son in The Lion in Winter. No John Castle? Surely you jest? Oh well...Dean Stockwell is there. Surprisingly none of the Oscar nominated performances got in...hmmm. And Montgomery Clift? I did not see that coming.

This is a good batch, to be honest. But no Spencer Tracy? What a travesty...and there were so many choices. I guess Kate and Spencer were not the best screen couple. We have two Oscar winning performances. Two that should have been nominated [Cary Grant, and Cary Grant], and one that should have one. This is going to be tough.

A good list...but no love for David Lean's good work for Summertime. Oh well.

It's an interesting bunch of nominees. The biggest snub for me was probably Jane Hudson in Summertime, but I suppose the film is not that popular. Two of Hepburn's Oscar winning roles are here, two other Oscar nominated and one that we'll all pretend won an Oscar.

And the final category...A very good bunch. Let's see what will happen here.

Oh well, people. Enjoy voting. Spread the word...and do your worst.

PS. Contribute also...

Addendum...Voting closure has been pushed back to October 17th. I'm going to be swamped in upcoming weeks.

Wednesday, 9 September 2009

Unless you've really not been paying attention you wouldn't have noticed my constant reminders to vote in the Katharine Hepburn Awards. Well it's been approximately three weeks so I'll be closing voting on Friday. If you haven't voted as yet, kindly do so. The results are very interesting so far. After closing polls, I'll probably open voting for the winners on Monday, lasting for a week or maybe two. You decide.

And totally off topic, but I've been having Harry Potter on my mind a lot lately, and I came across this hilarious discussion over on IMDB. Maybe it's just me, but these just had me cracking up.

Anyway, other than KH...what's on your mind? Have you seen the trailer for The Princess & the Frog, the prospective Antichrist poster. Hyped about Up In the Air?

Tuesday, 1 September 2009

Over at Award Talk, there's a list of ten good musicals and so I'm continuing the trend and listing my ten...at least what I think is my ten...I'm so indecisive I'll hate this list next week...and I won't rank them. You can posts your lists on your own sites or list them below.

In case you can't recognise them all...they are

Cabaret
Chicago
Beauty & the Beast
Moulin Rouge!
Funny Girl
West Side Story
The Sound of Music
The Wizard of Oz
Hello, Dolly!
Marry Poppins

As you can see I am besotted with the women...

Monday, 24 August 2009

I had to repost this. Sorry for the technical difficulties.

I am obsessed with Katharine Hepburn. In the seven months I’ve started this blog, I’ve not highlighted my idiosyncrasies. Today the idea came to me that Katharine Hepburn rocks. More than I have already acknowledged to myself. As such, I’ve decided to hold the Katharine Hepburn Awards which will be completed by September 25th. The rules are simple, all of Kate’s films face off – the screenplays for each, her leading men, her supporting men, her featured women, the director. You vote for five nominees in each of the categories. You’ll be given two weeks…and then it’ll continue like a normal Awards race. I’ll count the nominees…post them sometime during the second week in September and then you’ll vote for your winner each category. It’s simple. Oh, I forgot to say, vote for five only and please be honest.

Thank you very much for voting, spread the word as much as you can – I want this to be as diverse as possible. Do you like the idea? Are there any other categories I should add? Which actors deserve their own awards? Speak up!

Wednesday, 12 August 2009

Dear Reader...

Nothing much to say, just highlighting the two polls I've added to the sidebar. I decided I'd put two so there's one for everyone. Since the Period Film poll was not such a hit. My best friend tells me that I'm too elitist in my film choices and I need to become diverse so that more persons will be interested in the blog. So I'm throwing it out at you...which film [cringe] do you want me to review. I'm seriously worried you'll throw out something I never want to watch, but I'm being proactive. Do your worst.

And while I'm here. I've been thinking about this movie [and song] recently. But I also included another version. No it's not blasphemy. But it's always nice to hear someone else's take on the song...

Don't forget to vote, vote, vote, vote!!!!

Friday, 7 August 2009

No, I'm not talking about Anahita over at her blog, which you should check out. This is a game, I sort of made up. Let me explain. One of my friends is obsessed with facebook and she calls me constantly telling me about all the fun she has on it. Yes, she's an addict. The other day she day she was telling me about this game where you'd pick songs by an artist and and answer some questions. It seemed cool, but this is not a music blog, it's about film. So I thought I'd adapt the game and make it about movies. Some of the questions were about silly so I cut it down to ten and made my list. It's actually a cool thing to do. I'm going to send this over to some bloggers and post their responses as time continues. Even if I didn't send it to you, try it...on your blog or wherever...it's a cool way to pass the time.

You've heard of Stinkylulu, right? His Supporting Actress Smackdown series is almost legendary in the blogging world. Movie Mania has decided to adapt the series and he's beginning with 2002 which was one of the better years in film. The nominees are
Catherine Zeta Jones in Chicago [winner]
Kathy Bates in Adaptation
Queen Latifah in Chicago
Julianne Moore in The Hours
Meryl Streep in Adaptation

Anyone who wants to participate and has seen the films, it's simple. Judge the five actresses and rate them from 1-5, you're allowed one tie. Then right a short rant on their performances [25-50] words and send it to moviemania55@aol.com. You must have a blog to compete.

Wednesday, 29 July 2009

So those results for the polls are in and wouldn't you know it the winner is Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street with 15 of the votes, Moulin Rouge! was only 1 vote behind...and way behind was Chicago with 8 and then Dreamgirls with 3. I was thinking Moulin Rouge! would win... but Tim Burton takes it. I'll review the winning film by the end of the weeks. Thanks to everyone for voting. Below is my favourite scene/song from the film version.

PS. There's a new poll. VOTE VOTE VOTE. Comment below if you wish.
